What is Therapeutic Life Story Work?
Therapeutic Life Story Work (TLSW) is a structured, supportive process that helps care‑experienced children and young people make sense of their life experiences. It provides a safe and creative space to explore past events and build a clearer, more coherent understanding of their story.
It helps the child to:
· Understand what has happened to them and why
· Process feelings linked to past experiences, including trauma, loss, and separation
· Address gaps, confusion, or misinformation in their personal history
· Build a stronger sense of identity and self‑worth
Why Safe Harbour Stories?
Safe Harbour Stories is grounded in relational and attachment theory, creating a steady, supportive “harbour” where children feel safe to explore their life stories. A trusted adult attends each session wherever possible, offering consistency, emotional containment, and a secure base—like an anchor in changing seas.
The work is trauma-informed, recognising how loss, neglect, and disruption shape children’s feelings and responses. Through gentle narrative work, children begin to make sense of their experiences. At times, this process can feel choppy, but the calm harbour and steady adult presence provide safety and stability.
As shame begins to lift, a small light emerges. Like a lighthouse, it guides children toward a new belief—that they are worthy of lasting love and care—helping hope grow and lighting the way forward.
